Benin's electoral sponsorship system reignites debate
The sponsorship system for the presidential election in Benin has reignited debates about its fairness and relevance. This time the reaction comes from the presidential camp. A deputy of the Progressive Union, one of the blocks of the party in power, left the party, having accused the leader of taking away his sponsorship form and presenting it to a candidate of his choice. This is not the first time the party in power has been accused of fixing the ballot in favour of President Talon using the sponsorship system. The system requires each candidate to be formally sponsored by 16 mayors or members of parliament. Source: West Africa Democracy Radio
